The 27 nakshatras are the lunar mansions behind your Moon sign. Here's what they are, why they matter more than your zodiac sign, and how to start reading them.

If Western astrology asks "what's your sign?", Vedic astrology asks a subtler question: _where was the Moon?_ The answer is your **nakshatra** -- one of 27 lunar mansions that the Moon passes through on its monthly journey. For many Vedic astrologers, your nakshatra says more about your nature than your zodiac sign ever could.

## What Is a Nakshatra?

The Moon takes about 27.3 days to circle the zodiac. Divide that 360° belt into 27 equal slices of 13°20′ each, and you get the nakshatras -- from **Ashwini**, the first, to **Revati**, the last. Each has its own deity, symbol, ruling planet, and personality.

## Why Nakshatras Matter More Than Your Sun Sign

- **Resolution.** A zodiac sign is 30° wide; a nakshatra is 13°20′. It locates you far more precisely.
- **The Moon, not the Sun.** Vedic astrology treats the Moon -- the mind and emotions -- as the primary lens for personality.
- **Dashas.** Your nakshatra at birth sets your _Vimshottari Dasha_, the timeline that maps which planet governs each phase of your life.

Tip

Don't know your Moon nakshatra? You need your exact birth time and place -- the Moon moves about one nakshatra per day, so even a few hours matters.

## The Four Elements of Every Nakshatra

1. **Deity** -- the archetypal force it channels (e.g. Rohini's deity is Brahma, the creator).
2. **Symbol** -- a concrete image that captures its energy (Rohini's is an ox-cart, fertile and abundant).
3. **Ruling planet** -- which planet governs its dasha period.
4. **Gana** -- its temperament: _deva_ (divine), _manushya_ (human), or _rakshasa_ (intense).

## How to Start Reading Yours

Begin with three questions: Which nakshatra holds your Moon? Which planet rules it? What is its symbol telling you? From there, the mythology opens up quickly.
