Overview

## What Gangaur marks

Gangaur is one of Rajasthan's most important spring festivals and one of its most visibly women-led public traditions. "Gan" refers to Shiva and "Gaur" to Gauri or Parvati, but Gauri is the centre of the observance: married women pray for family wellbeing and unmarried women traditionally pray for a compatible partner and an independent, flourishing future. For roughly eighteen days after Holi, groups decorate clay or wooden images, sing neighbourhood songs and carry small pots or baskets of green shoots. The final Tritiya brings processions, music and the ceremonial farewell of Gauri.

Significance

## Mythology & meaning

The festival draws on the story of Parvati's disciplined devotion and her reunion with Shiva, yet its lived meaning is broader than marital status. Gauri represents spring fertility, water, the return of vegetation and a woman's continuing relationship with her natal as well as marital home. The sprouting of wheat or barley after Holi makes that agricultural theme tangible: growth is tended daily before it is carried into public view. Traditional songs also give women space to voice affection, teasing, complaint and social observation in their own idiom. Treating Gangaur only as a "husband vrat" therefore misses its community, artistic and seasonal dimensions. It is a long collective practice in which women create the images, organise the singing and shape the procession itself.

Rituals

## How it's celebrated

Customs begin with collecting clean soil or ritual ash after Holi, sowing grain in small baskets and making or dressing Isar-Gangaur images. Women may apply mehndi, wear bandhej or festive dress, carry water pots and sing ghudlia or Gangaur songs in groups. On the principal day, royal and community processions in Jaipur, Udaipur, Jodhpur and smaller towns carry richly decorated images toward a lake, well or garden. Some households immerse temporary clay images; others return heirloom wooden images to storage. Visitors should follow local crowd controls and avoid treating participants as photo props. At home, a lamp, a bowl of green shoots, Gauri-Shiva prayer and a shared seasonal meal are enough.

Across India

## Regional variations

Same festival, many names

Rajasthan is the heartland, with major processions in Jaipur and Udaipur and local forms across Mewar, Marwar, Shekhawati and Hadoti. Gangaur is also observed in parts of Madhya Pradesh, Gujarat and by Rajasthani communities elsewhere. The length of the cycle, whether images are immersed, the songs and the participation of unmarried women differ by community. The public procession date is the best shared reference; household rites can begin on locally chosen days after Holi.
