Overview

## What Govardhan Puja marks

Govardhan Puja falls the day after Diwali and commemorates young Krishna lifting the Govardhan hill to shelter the people and cattle of Vrindavan from a storm sent by a wounded, prideful Indra. Where much of the Diwali cluster focuses on wealth and light, this day centres on gratitude to nature and the land -- the food offering at its heart (Annakut) is a direct, tangible expression of that theme.

Significance

## Mythology & meaning

The cowherd community of Vrindavan traditionally made an annual offering to Indra, king of the gods and controller of rain, in thanks for the monsoon that fed their crops and cattle. The young Krishna questioned the custom, arguing that it was the land itself -- Govardhan hill, the pastures, the cattle -- that directly sustained the villagers' lives, and persuaded them to redirect their worship toward the hill and the natural world around them instead of Indra. Enraged at being slighted, Indra unleashed torrential rains and violent storms on Vrindavan, threatening to flood the entire region. Krishna is said to have responded by lifting the whole of Govardhan hill on the tip of his little finger, holding it aloft like a giant umbrella for seven days and nights, sheltering the villagers, their families, and their cattle beneath it until the rains finally stopped. Indra, humbled by the display and recognising Krishna's divinity, descended personally to apologise and acknowledge him as an incarnation of Vishnu. The story is often read as an early, pointed lesson about environmental gratitude -- thanking and protecting the land, water, and animals that sustain a community directly, rather than only the distant forces presumed to control them. The same day is separately observed in Maharashtra, Karnataka, and Goa as Bali Pratipada, commemorating King Mahabali, a generous demon-king whose growing power alarmed the gods; Vishnu, in his Vamana (dwarf) avatar, asked Bali for as much land as he could cover in three steps, then grew to cosmic size and covered heaven, earth, and (with Bali's own head, offered willingly) the netherworld, pushing Bali below -- but was so moved by Bali's humility and devotion that he granted him a boon to return to earth and be honoured by his people once every year, which is marked on this date in these regions alongside, and independently of, the Krishna-Govardhan story told elsewhere in India.

Rituals

## How it's celebrated

Communities and temples build small representations of Govardhan hill using cow dung, food, or clay, often decorated with grass to represent the pastures Krishna protected. The central ritual is Annakut, "a mountain of food" -- dozens of vegetarian dishes prepared and offered to Krishna in a single lavish spread, then distributed to devotees as prasad, echoing the abundance the hill is said to have sheltered. In rural and temple communities, cattle are washed, decorated with garlands and colour, and formally worshipped, honouring the story's original message about gratitude to the animals and land that sustain daily life, rather than seeking favour through ritual offering alone. In Vrindavan itself, thousands of pilgrims undertake a Govardhan Parikrama, circumambulating the hill on foot as an act of devotion. Some temples increase the Annakut spread to a specific, symbolically significant count -- 56 or, at especially large temples, 108 varieties of dishes -- arranged in tiers to resemble the hill itself before distribution as prasad. Merchants and neighbours in many regions also use the day, immediately after Diwali's main night, to exchange New Year-style greetings and renew business and personal relationships for the year ahead, particularly where Bali Pratipada or Bestu Varas traditions overlap with the Govardhan observance.

Across India

## Regional variations

Same festival, many names

In Braj -- Mathura and Vrindavan -- Govardhan hill is physically circumambulated by pilgrims, and the story is told with particular local reverence. In Gujarat, the same day is celebrated as Bestu Varas, the Gujarati new year, with family visits, new account-book blessings, and greetings rather than the Annakut-centred observance found elsewhere; the two observances share a date but have entirely separate content. In parts of North India the day is also referred to simply as Annakut or Padwa. In parts of Uttar Pradesh and Bihar outside the Braj region, the day is often observed more simply as Annakut, without the hill-building custom, focusing purely on the food offering itself. Nepal's Newar communities mark a related but distinct set of post-Diwali rituals across the same days, honouring cattle and household prosperity in their own local style, only loosely connected to the Krishna-Govardhan narrative told in North India.

Dates

## Govardhan Puja in 2027

In 2027, Govardhan Puja falls on Saturday, 30 October 2027 -- Kartik Shukla Pratipada -- the first day of the waxing moon, immediately after Diwali's new moon. At Ujjain the day runs Pratipada (Shukla Paksha), with the Moon in swati nakshatra. Tithi-based dates move with the lunar calendar each year; the rituals and significance stay the same.

## Frequently asked questions

When is Govardhan Puja in 2026?

Govardhan Puja falls on 9 November 2026, Kartik Shukla Pratipada, the day immediately after Diwali's new moon.

When is Govardhan Puja in 2027?

Govardhan Puja falls on 30 October 2027, Kartik Shukla Pratipada, the day immediately after Diwali's new moon.

What is the Annakut offering?

Annakut, meaning "a mountain of food," is a lavish spread of dozens of vegetarian dishes prepared and offered to Krishna on this day, symbolising the abundance and shelter Govardhan hill provided, then distributed to devotees as prasad.

Why did Krishna challenge the worship of Indra?

Krishna argued that it was the land, the hill, and the cattle that directly sustained Vrindavan's people, and persuaded villagers to redirect their gratitude there rather than to the more distant Indra -- a choice that provoked Indra's storm and Krishna's subsequent lifting of the hill to protect the village.

Is Govardhan Puja the same as Bestu Varas?

They fall on the same date but aren't the same observance -- Bestu Varas is the Gujarati new year, marked with family visits and new account books, while Govardhan Puja elsewhere centres on the Annakut food offering and the Krishna-Govardhan story. Both can be, and often are, observed together in Gujarati households.

Can Govardhan Puja be observed without cattle or a temple nearby?

Yes -- a small home-built representation of the hill from available materials, a simple food offering shared with family, and a moment of gratitude for the land and resources that sustain daily life cover the day's core meaning without needing cattle or a large temple.

What is Bali Pratipada and how does it relate to Govardhan Puja?

Bali Pratipada, observed the same day in Maharashtra, Karnataka, and Goa, honours King Mahabali, whom Vishnu's Vamana avatar pushed to the netherworld but permitted to return to earth once a year in honour of his humility. It's a distinct story from the Krishna-Govardhan legend told elsewhere, sharing only the date.
