Overview

## What Kajari Teej marks

Kajari Teej--also called Kajali Teej, Badi Teej or Satudi Teej--is the monsoon Teej of the dark fortnight of Bhadrapada. It is especially important in Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh and Bihar, where women gather for swings, mehndi, songs and a family vrat. "Kajari" also names a rich North Indian folk-song tradition whose verses evoke dark rain clouds, separation, longing and the return of the monsoon. That musical setting distinguishes the festival from Hariyali Teej and Hartalika Teej, even though all three are connected with Parvati and Shiva.

Significance

## Mythology & meaning

Popular worship honours Parvati's resolve and the Shiva-Parvati union as an image of steadiness in relationship. In everyday practice, however, Kajari songs often carry the emotional centre. Women sing about distance from the natal home, absent partners, difficult in-laws, rain and rural work--subjects that formal ritual language rarely accommodates so directly. The festival therefore combines devotion with a female oral archive of local life. Some regions connect the vrat with neem worship; others focus on a sattu preparation or evening moon offering. These variations should not be forced into a single rigid vidhi. The ethical core is care, mutual respect and space for women's voices, not a claim that fasting guarantees another person's longevity.

Rituals

## How it's celebrated

Observers may take a pre-dawn or daytime meal according to family practice, keep a fruit or water fast, draw a small ritual design, worship Parvati and Shiva, listen to the katha and offer arghya to the Moon. Sattu made from roasted grain, sweets, cucumber and seasonal foods are common. Community gatherings include kajari singing, swings and mehndi. Anyone who is pregnant, breastfeeding, diabetic, taking medicines or unwell should adapt or skip the fast. A shared prayer, song evening or donation to women's health work is a meaningful alternative to strict fasting.

Across India

## Regional variations

Same festival, many names

Bundi in Rajasthan is known for a public Kajli Teej procession, while Banaras and the Bhojpuri belt are famous for kajari music. In Rajasthan the name Badi Teej helps distinguish it from Hariyali Teej; in parts of Madhya Pradesh it may be called Satudi Teej because of the sattu offering. Moonrise and the exact Tritiya observance day remain location-sensitive.
