Lagna - Ascendant - Rising Sign

## Lagna (Ascendant) by Rising Sign

Your Lagna -- the sign rising on the eastern horizon at your exact birth time -- is the reference point every house in your Vedic chart is read from. Pick your rising sign for its full computed 12-house rulership map, Yogakaraka, and temperament.

Computed across all 12 ascendants

6 of the 12 ascendants -- Taurus, Cancer, Leo, Libra, Capricorn, and Aquarius -- classically produce a Yogakaraka: a single planet ruling both a kendra and a trikona house from that lagna at once.

Computed from the classical sign, planet, and house data for every ascendant -- not a stored guess.

Understanding the ascendant

## What the lagna actually is

### A fact of astronomy before it is astrology

The lagna is the point of the zodiac rising over the eastern horizon at the moment and place of your birth. It exists because the Earth turns: over 24 hours the horizon sweeps through all twelve signs, so each rashi spends roughly two hours rising. Two babies born in the same town on the same day, six hours apart, share nearly identical planetary positions -- but their lagnas sit three signs apart, and with them the entire house layout of their charts.

That is why the ascendant is the most individual thing in a birth chart, and the first thing the calculator fixes.

### Why the exact birth time matters

The lagna advances about one degree every four minutes. A recorded time that is off by half an hour can push the ascendant across a sign boundary -- and once the lagna changes, every house lord changes with it. The degree matters too: divisional charts like the navamsa slice each sign into ninths, so even within the correct rising sign, a few minutes shift the D9 lagna. Prefer the time on the birth record over family memory; where records disagree, astrologers rectify the time against dated life events.

### Lagna, rashi, sun sign: three anchors, three jobs

The three "signs" people quote answer different questions. The lagna, fixed by your birth time, sets the houses -- body, temperament, and how you move through the world. The rashi, your Moon sign, describes the mind and serves as the counting point for dashas, gochar, and Sade Sati. The Sun sign -- the only one Western media uses -- speaks to vitality and the core self, and in Jyotish it is one significator among nine rather than the headline. When a page on this site disagrees with a magazine, it is almost always because the two are talking about different anchors.

## Lagna FAQs

How fast does the lagna change?

It moves through all twelve signs every day -- roughly one sign every two hours, about one degree every four minutes. The exact pace varies with latitude and season, which is why the calculator needs your birth place as well as your birth time.

I don't know my birth time. Is my chart useless?

No. Your Moon sign and nakshatra usually stand without a precise time, since the Moon moves through a sign over two-plus days -- so rashi-based readings, dashas, and transit pages still work. The lagna and house placements do need a time; birth-time rectification against major dated events can often recover one.

Is the lagna more important than the Moon sign?

Classical practice refuses to choose: a result is checked from the lagna and from the Moon before it is trusted. Broadly, the lagna governs the concrete circumstances of a life, while the Moon governs how that life is experienced -- you need both for a reading that feels true.

## Your ascendant needs an exact birth time

Unlike your Sun sign, the Lagna shifts roughly every two hours. Compute your real chart to find your exact rising sign, then open its page for the full house-lord map and Yogakaraka.
