## A plain-language glossary

The Sanskrit terms you'll meet most often, explained simply.

Lagna-- Ascendant

The sign rising on the eastern horizon at your birth. It anchors the whole chart and shapes how you meet the world.

Rashi-- Zodiac sign

One of the twelve signs. Your moon rashi is especially important in Vedic astrology and drives your daily horoscope.

Bhava-- House

One of the twelve houses, each governing an area of life such as wealth, relationships, or career.

Graha-- Planet

A planet or luminary. Vedic astrology uses nine grahas, including the lunar nodes Rahu and Ketu.

Nakshatra-- Lunar mansion

One of the 27 segments the Moon travels through, giving a finer reading than the signs alone.

Dasha-- Planetary period

A span of life ruled by a particular planet. The Vimshottari dasha is the most widely used system.

Drishti-- Aspect

The 'gaze' of a planet onto other houses, describing where its influence reaches across the chart.

Yoga-- Planetary combination

A meaningful combination of planets that creates a recognizable effect in a chart.

Dosha-- Affliction pattern

A specific planetary pattern. Common and workable -- a tendency to understand, not a curse to fear.

Ayanamsa-- Zodiac offset

The angle between the tropical and sidereal zodiacs. Vedic astrology uses the sidereal zodiac via the Lahiri ayanamsa.

Navamsa-- D9 chart

A divisional chart of one-ninth divisions, read for marriage, dharma, and inner strength.

Kundli-- Birth chart

The birth chart itself -- the snapshot of the sky at the moment you were born.

Pada-- Quarter

A quarter of a nakshatra. Each mansion has four padas, adding still more detail to a placement.

Gochara-- Transit

The current movement of planets relative to your birth chart -- the basis of your daily horoscope.

Karaka-- Significator

A planet that naturally signifies a theme -- for example Venus for love, or Jupiter for wisdom.
