Understanding nakshatras

## How the 27 lunar mansions work

### A 13°20′ sky grid older than the signs

The nakshatras divide the same 360-degree zodiac into 27 equal arcs of 13°20′ each -- the distance the Moon covers in roughly one day. Indian calendars tracked nights by the Moon's mansion long before sign-based astrology, and the system still runs underneath everything here: your janma nakshatra is the mansion holding the Moon at your birth.

Every nakshatra has its presiding deity, symbol, gana (temperament class), and -- most consequential for prediction -- a Vimshottari dasha lord. The dasha you were born running, and the sequence of every mahadasha after it, is set by the Moon's exact degree inside its mansion.

### Padas: the quarter that sharpens the reading

Each mansion divides into four padas of 3°20′, each corresponding to one navamsa sign. Same nakshatra, different pada means a different D9 placement -- which is why padas shade career and marriage readings, and why the traditional birth-name syllable is assigned per pada, not per mansion.

### Why nakshatra outranks sign for personality and naming

A rashi is a broad 30-degree band; it contains two and a quarter nakshatras. When two people share a Moon sign yet feel nothing alike, the mansions usually explain it: a Krittika Moon and a Rohini Moon are both in Taurus, but they answer to different dasha lords and different deities. Naming ceremonies work at this finer grain too -- the pandit asks for nakshatra and pada, because a sign is too coarse to yield a syllable.

## Nakshatra FAQs

How do I find my janma nakshatra?

Enter your birth details into the chart calculator; it computes the Moon's sidereal longitude and names the mansion and pada. An approximate time usually suffices -- the Moon takes about a day per mansion -- but births near a boundary need a real time.

What decides my first dasha?

Your janma nakshatra's lord starts the Vimshottari sequence; the Moon's progress through the mansion at birth decides how much of that first period remains -- nearly all at its start, a sliver near its end.

Why do two people with the same rashi behave so differently?

Because one sign spans multiple nakshatras. Sharing a rashi only means both Moons sit somewhere in the same 30 degrees; the mansion -- with its own dasha lord, deity, and gana -- carries the finer signal, and the pada refines it again.
