Puranic tradition personifies Ekadashi as a protective power of Vishnu, while devotional schools treat the day as a regular pause from ordinary appetite and distraction. Its practical rhythm--twice a month--is one reason the vrat has remained widely observed: it creates recurring time for japa, reading, charity and simpler food. Different named Ekadashis carry their own kathas, from Nirjala and Devshayani to Mokshada and Vaikuntha. Those stories enrich a practice but should not be used to promise automatic merit or threaten punishment for a missed fast. Intention, health and consistency matter more than severity.
